Soup kitchen

South Africa has a strained social-welfare system which does not adequately alleviate conditions of poverty and unemployment in the Philippi area. Hunger and inadequate nutrition is a challenge. At iThemba Labantu we recognize the need for proper nutrition in both children and adults alike.

Our soup kitchen

At iThemba Labantu, we recognize the need for proper nutrition in both children and adults alike and to this end, we have set up a permanent soup-kitchen. What started as an old modified shipping container with a hole cut inside, has now developed into a two-storey building.

Our soup kitchen feeds about 300 children every day. The kids receive breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are five different meals, cooked at the soup kitchen. To give the children a balanced diet, every meal includes vegetables such as cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, rice, maize meal or noodles.dles.

Foodparcels

During the covid-19 pandemic we have been able to support several hundred people with very needed foodparcels.
