The township environment is a difficult place to grow up. Many children come from overcrowded households, so the only places to hang out are the streets where they are exposed to the threats of gangsterism and substance abuse. Being bored during the school holidays makes them even more vulnerable to getting involved in unsafe behaviour. Therefore we offer each autumn, winter and spring a holiday programme for the kids. Around 200 children and youth between the ages of 6-18 years attend these programmes. The programme starts at 10 am and ends at 4pm and includes a hot lunch and fruit. Each day consists of a variety of activities so everybody can enjoy themselves. These activities include exciting craft projects, baking, dance, drama and music. The kids can try out different sports codes and let their energy out on the sports field. Educational sessions about child abuse, drugs, and personal safety form part of the daily program. We invite other organisations like the Iziko Museum, Two Oceans Aquarium and Planetarium to offer exciting and interactive presentations to the participants. Outings form part of every holiday program and are definitely a main attraction as most children hardly ever leave the townships. Outings include hikes, relaxing at the beach, visiting museums or animal parks. The program always ends with a performance by the participants and a party packet for each participant.
