WHO WE ARE

WE ARE iTHEMBA LABANTU

As a church based NGO, we believe that to make God’s love for the world visible, we must do more than just proclaim his word. We should also show people God’s love through our actions.

That’s why we strive to improve the social and economic conditions of the greatly disadvantaged people of the Philippi area by offering them free access to nutrition, education and health care. We also empower them through income generating projects and skills development projects and give them access to a variety of recreational and team building activities.

We dream of a future that enables this community to be healthy, educated and self reliant members of society. For many here at iThemba Labantu, this dream has already become a reality. With your contribution we can make a difference in many more people’s lives.

HISTORY

In the 1860s, German farmers settled here in order to grow vegetables on the sandy soil of the so-called Cape Flats.

In the Apartheid years the government declared parts of Philippi a “black spot” and the white farmers were moved. They left behind, a church and a cemetery in the area, which was later bought by a trust consisting of the previously “white” Lutheran Church, the “black” Lutheran Church and the Moravian Church.

This church alliance saw the great need of assisting the inhabitants of one of the poorer areas in the Cape Town Metropolis, and so the iThemba Labantu – Lutheran Community Centre was formed.
